Enrique Alfredo Lutgen

Mr. Enrique Alfredo Lutgen, age 94, of Bowdon, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026, his 94th birthday.

Born on September 6, 1932, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Enrique was the son of the late Enrique Bodo Lutgen and the late Amneris (Martinez) Selva. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Marisa (Selva) Hubscher, and his grandson, Phillip Henry Walker Thompson.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Neda M. (Conti) Lutgen of Bowdon; two sons and their spouses, Eduardo and Claudia (Engroba) Lutgen of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Alfredo Lutgen-Conti and Kevin Manion of New York; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Lutgen) and Mark Rich of Bowdon; and his cherished grandchildren, George Rae Thompson III, William Robert Edward Thompson, Alexandra Ackerman and her husband Wyatt, Sophia Lutgen and her husband Dario Martinez, and Federico Lutgen and Ivana Parodi. He is also survived by his first cousin, Susana Elisa (Martinez) Arroyo.

Enrique was, in many respects, a true Renaissance man, possessing remarkable talents and a wide range of interests. As a young man, he proudly served in the Argentine Army. Following his military service, he earned his bachelor’s degree and worked with FIAT in Argentina. During these years, Enrique and his wife were close friends with famed Argentine author Manuel Puig.

After relocating to the United States, Enrique dedicated the next twenty years of his career to higher education, serving as a professor at Norwich University in Vermont. Upon his retirement, he and his wife made their home in Bowdon, where he found great joy in farm life. He had a unique gift for working with animals, earning the affectionate nickname “The Chicken Whisperer.”

Enrique also enjoyed mountain climbing, writing poetry, discussing politics, and reading. He was a devoted soccer enthusiast and never missed an opportunity to follow the sport he loved. Above all else, he treasured his family. Whether spending time together or surprising them with thoughtful gestures, his greatest happiness came from those he loved most.

Enrique will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. His presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

In accordance with Mr. Lutgen’s wishes, he will be cremated.
