Janet Louise Whitmer

Mrs. Janet Louise (Van Dyke) Whitmer, age 87, of Villa Rica passed away on Friday, October 18, 2024. She was born in Hanford, California on February 23, 1937. Mrs. Whitmer was the daughter of the late, Lyle Edward Van Dyke, Sr. and the late, Beulah Mae (Stewart) Van Dyke. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whitmer is preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Whitmer and by her brother, Lyle Edward Van Dyke, Jr.

Mrs. Whitmer was known for her creative and artistic abilities. She graduated from San Jose St. University with a Bachelor of Art Degree. Throughout her college years her summers were spent working to help her parents pay for her education. She spoke fondly of her time working as a Stewardess for Catalina Airlines and was particularly proud of her time drawing sketches of new aircraft and rockets at Lockheed Martin’s Skunkworks wherein she had secret clearance and used her art skills to draw plans for various test aircraft and rockets. Mrs. Whitmer was a teacher her entire adult life beginning with her first love, high school art. Mrs. Whitmer took a break from teaching while her children were young. In the late 70s she began teaching again working with elementary school students and retiring after 40 years of teaching. Janet was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed creating, making porcelain dolls, pottery, needlepoint, and calligraphy to name a few. She loved snow skiing and water skiing, sailing in the Caribbean and traveling with her family. 

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Michael Kelling of Villa Rica son, Jason Stewart Whitmer of Simi Valley, California; and by her grandchildren, Gwyneth June Whitmer, Kathryn Grace Whitmer and Griffin James Whitmer, of Eagle, Idaho.

In accordance with Mrs. Whitmer’s arrangements, she will be cremated and her ashes spread off of the California coast.
